Bookmark Google Maps
Published September 6th, 2005 in FeedmarkerEver wanted to share your favorite neighborhood walk, or the best places to visit in your city? Well, now Feedmarker makes creating, saving and sharing annotated maps easy. First, an example:
- Here’s my (almost) weekly walk around Lake Harriet in Minneapolis, complete with notes pointing out places of interest.
- In July I visited my family in Buenos Aires, Argentina; this map is a quick walking tour of downtown.
- Bookmarked Google maps are a great way of conveying information, here’s one I made of the Central Business District in New Orleans (note how you can even add images to the individual marker pop-ups).
Implementing this feature in Feedmarker was suprisingly straightforward, mainly because the Google Maps API is so easy to use. Signing up for an API key is painless, and customizing the maps is a matter of a few lines of code. When you create a map, Feedmarker encodes the routes and marker point information in an XML format called GPX, which is made for GPS data storage and interchange.
So, to get you started tagging maps, here are some suggestions:
- I’m going to be in Pamplona, Spain, later this month. Anyone know of some good places to visit while I’m there?
- Make a map showing where you walk your dog. Maybe you’ll find other Feedmarker users on your route.
- Have you gone on a road trip recently? Plot the route (don’t forget to describe the places where you stopped. If you took photos, include those in the marker pop-ups.
To get started, go to to the Feedmarker dashboard (you’ll need to be logged in), and click on the “Include a map with this bookmark” link.
Very nice work! and very good explanation as well!!
